Patient guides

Plain answers to common questions

Short guides to help you prepare for appointments and understand your options. They are general information, not a substitute for a consultation.

Pregnancy

Your first pregnancy appointment

The first visit confirms the pregnancy and sets up your care for the months ahead.

  • Note the first day of your last period
  • Bring any previous pregnancy records and reports
  • List medicines and supplements you take
  • Start folic acid if you haven't already
Gynaecology

Fibroids: what to know

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus. Many cause no symptoms, while others cause heavy periods, pain or pressure.

  • A pelvic scan usually confirms them
  • Treatment depends on symptoms, size and pregnancy plans
  • Options range from medicines to surgery
Prevention

The HPV vaccine and cervical screening

Most cervical cancers are linked to HPV. Vaccination and regular screening together lower the risk.

  • The vaccine works best before exposure to HPV, ideally in the pre-teen years
  • Adults can also benefit; ask which schedule suits your age
  • Screening is still needed after vaccination
Fertility

Preparing for a fertility consultation

Coming prepared helps make the most of your first visit.

  • Track your cycle dates for a few months if you can
  • Bring all previous test results and treatment records for both partners
  • Plan to attend together
Pregnancy

Your baby's movements

Most women begin to feel movements in the second trimester. Get to know your baby's usual pattern.

  • A change or reduction in movements needs checking the same day
  • Don't wait until the next day to see if movements improve
Gynaecology

Heavy periods are not something to put up with

Periods that soak through protection hourly, last longer than a week or cause tiredness may have a treatable cause.

  • Keep a note of how long and how heavy your periods are
  • A blood test can check for anaemia
  • A scan can look for fibroids or polyps

These guides are general information. Your own care may differ, so always follow the advice given at your consultation.
